For many people, especially women, unattractive veins on the legs, face and back can be embarrassing. In the past, most people who had vein issues such as varicose veins had to wear unattractive stockings to help deal with the discomfort. Thankfully, modern medicine has come up with many different types of vein treatment options to help rid those affected of this problem.

Types of Vein Treatment

The type of treatment given will depend primarily on the type of vein problem. Some treatment options will either remove the problem or minimize the look and size of the veins. Vein issues and the treatment options include:

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins represent the most common type of vein problem.  There are a number of treatment options for people with varicose veins, some of which are:

  • Vein removal surgery: This is used for people with severe varicose veins. With this procedure, the veins are either tied-off or totally removed. One form of vein removal treatment is known as ambulatory phlebectomy. Vein stripping and ligation are other forms of removal treatment for severe cases of this condition.
  • Clarivein: This modern treatment option is minimally invasive and does not require local anesthesia. With this treatment, a disposable catheter is inserted temporarily in the area. The tip rotates to evenly distribute the solution. The solution seals the veins; after rotation, the doctor will remove the device and use bandages to compress the area.
  • Laser vein removal: With this treatment, laser light energy is directed at the veins which cause them to shrink. This treatment option is minimally invasive and is not very painful.

Reticular Veins

These enlarged capillaries look like varicose veins, but are smaller.  The main treatment option is sclerotherapy.  The process involves injecting a solution, such as salt or special detergent, called a sclerosant into the veins. This substance irritates the lining of the veins, which causes them to collapse. The collapsed veins are then reabsorbed into the body. Depending on the number of veins, more than one session may be needed.

Spider Veins

These are enlarged capillaries that can be red, purple or blue, and that are present mostly in the face. The main treatment options for spider veins are sclerotherapy and Laser vein removal.

Changes in lifestyle such as an improvement in skin care methods, diet and exercise to lose weight can help in minimizing the appearance of spider and varicose veins.  One of the good things about most types of vein treatment therapy these days is that they are minimally invasive. The recovery time for basic laser varicose vein treatment ranges from six to 12 weeks. In some cases, the veins may reappear and need further treatment.
